BANYAN SYSTEMS AND DCA ANNOUNCE
STRATEGIC TECHNOLOGY RELATIONSHIP
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Banyan Systems, Inc. and Digital Communications
Associates, Inc. (DCA) today announced a strategic partnership
involving the joint development and marketing of products to
integrate, seamlessly and transparently, IBMR SNA networks with
BanyanR VINESR enterprise-wide networks supporting a heterogenous
mix of desktop computing platforms.
As part of the relationship, announced at the InterOp '91 trade
show here, DCA will customize its IRMALAN/EPTM gateway software for
use with the VINES network operating system. In addition, the two
companies will develop a VINES/SNA communications server for access
to single or multiple IBMR mainframes or other peer computers on an
SNA network.
"Banyan recognizes the importance of providing comprehensive
SNA-to-VINES interconnectivity products. Today, Banyan offers 3270
products for DOS VINES clients. In addition, there are new
products we want to deliver to the market quickly," said James
D'Arezzo, Banyan vice president of marketing. "This serves as a
strong motivation for us to build a business relationship with DCA.
Such an association will provide the best solution for linking the
huge installed base of SNA networks with today's most popular
desktop workstations -- computing environments that
previously had limited access to each other."

BANYAN SYSTEMS AND DCA ANNOUNCE RELATIONSHIP/Page 2
He said that Banyan's teaming with DCA is noteworthy for several
reasons:
* DCA's leadership in SNA connectivity
* Banyan's leadership in wide-area heterogeneous connectivity
* Common company objectives with regard to SNA support
* Ability to cooperatively develop, produce, market, and
support a product set clearly differentiated from
competitive offerings
Gerald W. Buran, DCA vice president of sales and marketing, said
his company's relationship with Banyan will expand the breadth of
DCA's network compatibility to the UNIX platform. "Our alliance
with Banyan will move us closer to our goal of providing 3270
communications in the heterogeneous computing environments found in
large, global organizations," Buran said. "Combining our SNA
solutions with VINES networks opens up applications development and
resource sharing that will enable VINES users to build feature-rich
and more robust networks."
The combination of Banyan and DCA technologies presents a number of
unique advantages:
* Consistent capabilities across all client types (DOS,
Windows, OS/2, and Macintosh)
* Network transparent access to SNA and VINES services with
a single user login
* Consistent network management and product configuration
* Comprehensive SAA support
* Strong suite of 3270 applications from third parties
The customized VINES-compatible version of DCA's IRMALAN/EP gateway
-- which will be renamed and repackaged by Banyan -- will provide
DOS, WindowsTM, and MacintoshR clients with transparent 3270
connectivity into the VINES environment. It will offer users 3270
terminal and printer emulation, up to 128 concurrent sessions, and
integrated VINES IP support, eliminating the need for NetbiosTM.
The VINES/SNA-based communications server -- to be developed
jointly by DCA and Banyan -- will support DOS, Windows, OS/2R, and
Macintosh clients, offering users network-wide support
for 3270 terminal and printer emulation, client and server LU6.2
support, and fully integrated SNA services. Other features include
a service print LU manager, up to 254 concurrent sessions, plus
compatibility with IBM's NetViewTM, as well as DCA's All Point
Addressable (APA) graphics software and the Standard IRMA Scripting
Language (SISL).

As part of the marketing agreement, Banyan will market several DCA
hardware products, including the IRMAtrac Token Ring network
interface card and the Intelligent Synchronous
Communications Adapter (ISCA) for remote communications, as well as
DCA's 3270 APA Graphics software for IBM graphics terminal
emulation.
The VINES-compatible version of IRMALAN/EP will be available and
supported exclusively through Banyan's worldwide distribution
network. Delivery is planned for first quarter, 1992; pricing
is not yet available.
In addition to the new products described above, Banyan will
continue to sell and support its current IBM 3270/SNA and Advanced
IBM 3270/SNA Options for DOS VINES clients.
